Collectively our culture associates "mother" with nurture, love and care. And that is the connotative meaning of mother. In Stephen J Gould's "just in the middle" he discucced vitalists and mechanists. And in writing an article the mechanist is the literal definition and the vitalist is the

  2. Connotative definition of the word. Denotative - mechanist, connotative - vitalists.

Stephen J Gould's audience for the article, is for anyone who may be interested. As well as those who don't believe. And he convinces the opposition with his diction.

  3. We discussed the subject, occasion, audience, purpose, and speaker (SOAPS) of Just in the Middle. We also talked about the diction of the essay and the difference between denotative language and connotative language (denotative: dictionary definition; connotative: suggested meaning -for example, our society associates the word "mother" with caretaker, nurturer, love, etc.).
